1,000 Books before Kindergarten

Bedford Public Library's newest early childhood literacy program will launch April 1.  The program, 1,000 Books before Kindergarten, is designed to help parents prepare their children for one of life's big milestones:  Kindergarten.  A myriad of research projects have proven over and over that children get ready to read, years before they begin their formal education.  The most effective way to get your child ready to learn is to read to them.

It's a simple act:  an adult reading aloud to a child.  But the simplicity underlies great importance.  According to reading and learning experts, reading aloud with children is the single most important activity for parents to prepare children to learn to read.  It can:

  • Stimulate language and cognitive skills
  • Build vocabulary
  • Encourage positive feelings about books and reading later in life
  • Help children cope during stressful times

Parents/caregivers can visit BedfordLibrary.org for details or drop by the Children's Information Desk to begin your child's journey to a 1,000 Books before Kindergarten.
