In February 2020, Risland Homes, a North Texas-based home builder and developer, launched the “My Dream Home” art contest, allowing elementary and middle school students to get creative and stay occupied during Texas’ stay-at-home orders. The task was simple: draw your dream home. Risland received more than 100 entries from kids throughout all of Dallas-Fort Worth. After submitting their artworks, the young artists campaigned for votes from their friends and families. At the conclusion of the voting period, Risland announced the winners of the contest.

One winner, a nine-year-old from Argyle, TX, was excited to have an activity like the “My Dream Home” art contest to keep her busy and brain running during Texas’ shelter-in-place order. Her dad said, “the art contest, sponsored by Risland, could not have come at a better time with the stay-at-home orders over the past few months. She was not only able to express her creativity, but she was also able to explore different ways to market her artwork for votes. She absolutely had a blast with the home design and the challenge!”

Risland began this contest with the hope of inspiring kids to think outside of the box and design a home that exists in their imagination. Some submissions looked like a typical home, and others were only what a child could dream of. All in all, the team at Risland was impressed with the limitless creativity of elementary and middle school students.

While this is Risland Homes’ first contest of this nature, the team hopes to have similar opportunities to engage the DFW community in the future. Having just completed construction on the amenity center in their first North Texas development, Legacy Gardens, Risland plans on hosting events and contests for all of DFW to enjoy in the months and years to come.
